Online Learning Tips for Parents

March 22, 2021 1 Comments

When the pandemic started, all schools have been closed. It is unwise for kids to go out and have face-to-face classes, so most students have shifted to online learning at home. This experience is new and overwhelming for all educators, students, and parents.

To make the best of their learning experience from home, here are some Online Learning Tips for Parents to consider:

Online Learning Tips for Parents

1. Find a learning space where your child can study and learn

Having their own learning space with minimal distractions will help them concentrate. These might be challenging for some families like us who have a small house, but their designated learning space doesn't have to be huge and fancy. You can use whatever you already have at home as long as they are comfortable with the set-up.

2. Set-up a Schedule

Routines help children learn how to manage their tasks. Try to get your kids on the same schedule they had when they were going into school. Aside from their online class schedule, try to have the same itinerary for their sleeping and wake-up time, meal times, study time, playtime, break time, or snack time.

Children need a break when things get too stressed for them, so let them play, and organize a  fun activity together. You can be flexible with your schedules and make adjustments if necessary. See what works best for your child.

3. Reduce Distractions

Children get easily distracted. To keep them focused, remove the toys from their learning space and turn off your TVs or radio. If they have their cellphones or any gaming gadgets, keep them away to avoid distractions during their online class.

4. Set Rules on their Internet and Gadget Usage

These days, children have easy access to internet sites and have learned to use technology for educational and leisure purposes. As much as possible, parents want their kids to stay focused on learning and minimize their exposure to games, social media, and YouTube videos.

Establish a time when the kids can use their gadgets for non-school-related activities and how much time they must spend using them. For example, they can play games or watch their favorite movies/series after accomplishing their homework. Be firm on your rules and stick to them.

5. Be Patient and Supportive

Lastly, be patient with your child. Shifting from traditional school to online learning at home is not easy for them, and some kids are still adjusting. Just be there to support them and let them learn at their own pace.

I hope you find these online learning tips helpful. Our online journey is far from perfect, but I am glad that it has been made possible thanks to the fast and reliable internet connection of PLDT Home.

Fun Activities for Kids During Quarantine

March 15, 2021 0 Comments
Staying at home for over a year is quite challenging for us parents. Some kids aren't used to staying at home. They miss going out and doing outdoor activities, especially with their friends.

If you're running out of ideas on how to keep your kids entertained while being quarantined at home, I recommend fun activities you can do with them on this blog post. Hopefully, my list can help you.

Fun Activities for Kids During Quarantine

Here are some fun activities that you and your kids can do during the quarantine:

1. Watch and explore different kinds of animals in their natural habitat or in an aquarium live on cam!

There are lots of livestream feeds to choose from on the Explore website. We enjoyed watching the different animals in the oceans, birds, wildlife from Africa, the bears, especially the pandas--they are so cute! You can even watch the Aurora Borealis - Northern Lights

2. Explore Mars surface from the comfort of your home.

Access Mars welcomes anyone with an internet connection. Take a guided tour of what some scientists have experienced on Mars. Check it out here: http://g.co/accessmars
Access Mars_ Follow the Curiosity Rover's Tracks in Virtual Reality

3. Play board games like Scrabble, Snake & Ladders, Monopoly, Chess, etc.

Playing board games is a fun bonding activity for the family. It also keeps your mind engaged and helps improve critical thinking.

4. Build a blanket tent or fort

This is also a fun activity that your kids will surely enjoy. Building their own fort will develop your kid's fine motor skills and boost their creativity and imaginative skills.

It's an amazing activity where they can do role plays, or just hang around their tent or fort and read a book or watch a movie.

5. Create a Boredom Jar with a list of random activities

Creating a Boredom Jar helps kids to be active and productive. It’s a great way to reduce their screen time. In this activity, you will only need a jar, paper, and make a list of things or chores that your kids can do whenever they say "I'm bored."

(Note: I made this list before the pandemic happened, so you can just omit the outdoor activities on the list)

6. Draw, Color and Paint

Kids love to draw, color, and paint. Let them be imaginative and creative.  It helps increase their emotional intelligence and reduces their stress levels.
Fun Activities for Kids During Quarantine
My daughter loves to draw. She learned to draw her favorite movie characters on Art for Kids Hub's YouTube channel. You can check it out too. I'm sure you'll also enjoy watching and learning together with your kids.

7. Bake yummy treats

Bake cupcakes, cookies, or brownies and eat them together. In this activity, your kids will learn how to measure the ingredients, boost their creativity and develop their fine motor skills.

8. Exercise together

Exercising together is a healthy way to bond with your kids. It keeps them active, maintains their healthy body, and improves their posture.

9. Connect with family members and friends

Staying at home reduces our kid's engagement with other people, especially our family members and friends who live far from us. It's a good thing that there are messaging apps like Facebook and Viber where we can chat and do video calls every time we miss them.

My daughter received a tablet from her Grandmother as a Christmas gift last year. I've installed Messenger for Kids and added our family members and her close friends to it. She's very happy that she can now chat and talk to her cousins, former classmates, and her best friend Nati anytime (except during online class hours), all thanks to our reliable internet service provider - PLDT Home.

By the way, you can restrict your kid's usage on Messenger for Kids. There’s an option in the app where you can turn on the sleep mode at specific hours. In our case, I let the app sleep during mornings until after lunch, so it would not disturb her when she is having her online class.

10. Learn to Edit and Create Amazing Designs

Recently, my daughter got interested in creating designs using Canva. She enjoyed creating different designs using my account, and I am happy that she learned a new skill.

By the way, Canva is a free-to-use graphic design platform where you can create graphics, edit photos, and style images. It has a lot of tools and features that you can use to help you create amazing designs. It is actually one of the essential tools that I used when I was still working as a Social Media Manager.

There's No Place Like Home Canva Challenge
Here's the sample photo of my 9-year-old daughter's design using Canva. :)

11. Listen to Audiobooks

I've recently discovered this Disney Audiobooks playlist on Spotify. It has a lot of stories from Disney movies that my daughter enjoys listening to before we sleep. She also gets to discover old Disney movies because of this playlist, like the Emperor's New Groove, The Rescuers Down Under, and Oliver & Company.

12. Plant seeds and watch them grow

Gardening is fun, and it helps kids learn more about plants. It will keep them busy, too, taking care of their plants every day and monitoring their progress. Plus, growing your own food can be rewarding and help you save money.

So, those are just some of the activities that you and your kids will enjoy doing at home. I hope these fun activities with your kids will help strengthen your bond as a family and reduce the stress that this pandemic has brought us. Have fun!

Self-Care Checklist

March 03, 2021 0 Comments
Self-care is important most especially during these trying times where most of us feel stressed, anxious, sad, irritable, drained physically and/or mentally, etc.

Taking a break from watching the headlines about the pandemic can help lessen your negative thoughts and feelings, that's what I do, and it also helps to have a "Me Time" too. Taking a few minutes off from your usual routine can have a huge impact on your overall well-being.

For moms like me who had been stuck at home since last year and have bouts of panic attacks, it really helps to have time to take care of yourself, relax and recharge. So, what do I do? I watch movies or tv series, listen to music, gardening, exercise, write or blog, play online games or board games with my daughter, or go out and ride a scooter with her.

Love yourself - self-care

Self-care comes in a variety of forms, it looks different from person to person with different preferences and needs. So, find a time and do whatever makes you feel better and don't think of it as a selfish act. You can't pour from an empty cup, love yourself first.

Self Care Checklist, Tips, and Ideas
Treat yourself like someone you love...  It's okay to take a break, a moment for yourself... It's okay to be selfish if it means rediscovering your own power and happiness...

Ways To Prepare Your Home For Natural Disasters

February 15, 2021 0 Comments
Natural disasters are inevitable especially with the increasing global warming surface temperatures that are happening for the past years. Truly climate change has brought so many calamities and disasters not just in the Philippines but worldwide. It can hit us anytime without warning and with these occurrences, it is best to protect you and your family and start to Prepare Your Home For Natural Disasters.

Ways To Prepare Your Home For Natural Disasters

Here are some of the Ways To Prepare Your Home For Natural Disasters:

Prepare a Go Bag for each member of your family at home with first-aid supplies and their medicines if they have maintenance to take. Here are the essentials items to put in your Go-Bag:
  • Important documents and cash sealed inside a plastic bag.
  • Water and Food that is not perishable and have long expiry dates
  • Whistles (one for each family member)
  • Flashlight with extra batteries and matches/lighter
  • Swiss knife
  • Powerbank/s
  • Toiletry and Hygiene supplies
  • Raincoat, Jacket, and/or Blanket
  • Extra clothes and underwears
  • Resealable plastic bags
  • Face masks and face shield
  • Paper and pen
  • Extra keys to your home
Remember to put your Go Bags in a designated place and make sure that your family members know where they are located so you can just easily grab them in case of emergency.

Two of the most common natural disasters that our country is experiencing over the years are Earthquakes and Floods.

Earthquakes are unpredictable and can do damage to your homes, so if you live in a place where there are frequent earthquakes it's best to keep your appliances and other breakable items safe. Consider securing your tall bookshelves and cabinets and bolt them to the wall, this could prevent the furniture from falling down and keep you and your family safe. In an event of an earthquake, keep calm and be sure your family knows what to do to keep them safe by doing the "Duck, Cover, and Hold" practice. If it is safe, evacuate if necessary to further prevent any injuries and contact your emergency hotline for further assistance and help if you needed one.

After an earthquake, make sure to check your walls for cracks, other signs of structural damage, and electrical wiring issues that might endanger your family, and have them all repaired immediately.

Our country (Philippines) is visited by Typhoons every year by an average of 20. As we all know typhoons cause floods which may damage your homes and other properties. If you're living in a flood-prone area, you and your family should always be prepared, stay alert, and be informed by listening to the radio or watching TV news for flood warnings and updates. Turn off your gas tank, disconnect your electrical appliances and move it to a higher place to prevent any electrical problems and keep them safe should a flood enters your house. Also, keep your valuables in a safe place especially your important documents.

Be ready to evacuate at any moment and have your Go Bags and other emergency items accessible for everyone in your household to easily grab and go.

No one can predict some of the Natural Disasters from happening but you can prepare for them before it happens. By strengthening your homes and consider getting insurance, it may help protect yourself, your family, and your home from any danger and harm.

DIY Haircut at Home - Tipid Hacks for Everyone!

February 10, 2021 0 Comments

Out of the blue, I decided to cut my hair. My hair has grown long already and the last time I cut it was last summer, so I grab a scissor and started cutting my hair in front of the mirror in the bathroom (lol).

Here is the output of my DIY Haircut. I also decided to dress up so when my daughter saw me with my new hairdo and outgoing clothes, she asked me: "Saan ka punta, Ma?" She's used to seeing me na nakapang-bahay lang since ECQ kaya nagulat at napatanong talaga siya.

I've been cutting my own hair ever since I was single and I still do it now that I am already a mother. I also cut my daughter's hair and my hubby's too with the help of a razor that we borrowed from my sister-in-law. By doing this, we can save money (tipid talaga) and since we are still in quarantine, it's best to just stay at home and do it yourself (DIY).

It was hard the first time I did this, looking at the mirror while cutting your hair isn't that easy, especially when you can't see the back part of your hair. But, there's a trick to this DIY Haircut at Home and I'll share it with you

  1. The first thing you'll do is brush your hair and bring it all to the front then tie it with any hair ties or scrunchies you have.
  2. Then, tie your hair again to the part where you want it to be cut, it's up to you on how short do you want it to be.
  3. Then, you can start cutting your hair to that part and you're done! Easy, right?

As for me, I cut it really short this time it's shoulder-length. I also like my hair to have that layered look, so what I do to get that look is I cut my hair vertically, just a few inches from the tip of my hair and that's it. My layered haircut is done! By the way, I just use a regular scissor. :)

And one last thing, be confident and trust yourself that you can do it! Good luck! ;)

I hope this is DIY Haircut Tips and Hacks is helpful to you. I don't have a photo or video of myself doing this layered haircut though, but maybe next time I'll record it so it will be much easier to follow the steps. :)

Immunity Tips for Your Family During the Coronavirus Pandemic

May 19, 2020 0 Comments
Our country and others as well are fighting against the Coronavirus which affected thousands of people worldwide. All of us are vulnerable during this pandemic that's why we should always wash our hands, clean and disinfect our houses or buildings, and when going out be sure to wear masks and other protective gear and practice social distancing to protect yourself thus slowing the spread of Coronavirus.

Aside from doing the protective measures to keep ourselves safe, it is also important to keep ourselves healthy as possible by boosting our immune system and live a healthy lifestyle. Our global health situation has affected us critically and required us all to make our well-being a top priority. We are more than happy to have Watsons as our trusted and reliable health retailer.
Here are a few Immunity Tips for your family:

Be active – Take time to exercise every day, from hardcore to a simple exercise or yoga can definitely help improve your mood and helps strengthen your immune system to fight diseases. Make sure to allot time for exercise even for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour at least 4 times a week. Go for exercises you can do with a group like dance or cardio workouts so you can involve the whole family.

Eat right – A big factor that can spell the change in strengthening your family’s immunity is watching what you eat. A lot of people nowadays go for take outs and processed foods which is not good for our body and can weaken our immune system. We have to strengthen our body and eat foods rich in good quality protein, vitamins and minerals like vegetables such as carrots and broccoli, to flavorful spices like garlic and ginger. Additionally, you can also finish your meals with a warm cup of comfort courtesy of Nutrabliss by Watsons Tea.

I also love drinking lemonade or calamansi juice if there's no lemon available.

Get quality sleep – Getting a good night's sleep is crucial for moms and most especially to first time moms who are sleep-deprived even on lockdown or quarantine because some are still working at home while doing household chores and keeping the sanity of their household. It's still best to get adequate sleep every night to give your body rest and to manage stress levels. Manage the household’s schedule and make room for most of your activities in the morning, so the family can sleep soundly come nighttime.
Take vitamins regularly – With our situation now, some natural sources of vitamins may be hard to come by. With trips to the grocery stores becoming more challenging, know that you can also count on taking vitamins to strengthen your family’s immunity. We all know Vitamin C is critical for family members all ages. Pro tip? Stock up on your supply with Watsons Generics Ascorbic Acid.

But Vitamin C isn’t the only vitamin that can keep you healthy, Conzace Soft Gel—rich in Zinc, Vit. A, C, and E—helps boost immunity and promote healthy hair and skin. Myra E 400IU, on the other hand, is also rich with Vitamin E to help fight cell damage. For the kids, let’s help support their growth not just in height but in strength with Growee Syrupor Cherifer PGM with Zinc capsules.

Top up with supplements - Vitamin and mineral supplements can also play an important role. Like vitamins, supplements are a great way to give your health an extra boost. You can easily rely on taking supplements to help provide the nutrients you need on top of maintaining a healthy diet. Given that going back outdoors could mean exposure to environmental factors that may cause damage to our skin and body, make sure you keep that healthy glow from within with supplements like MET Tathione, NU Essence Collagen, and Organique Acai Juice. You can also keep your defenses up with supplements that harness the power of natural ingredients such as MX3 capsules and Watsons Generics Malunggay + Mangosteen.

Your must-haves at hand – Preparedness is key to protection, so make sure you have your healthessentials to help your home stay ready for anytime sickness may strike. From easy relief in yourmedicine cabinet, Ascof Forte Syrup, Strepsils, healthy choices in your pantry, Prosource Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, to the items you need to stay clean like Biogenic Ethyl Alcohol, know that you can count on these items available at Watsons.

Although changes don't happen overnight especially for those who have a sedentary lifestyle for a while,  the sooner you start doing  these healthy habits and recommendations, the sooner your immune system will respond. :)

Keeping a strong immune system is your best defense against disease and to decrease the exposure of viruses especially the coronavirus. Good thing Watsons is here to continue providing your family's health essentials in any of its stores nationwide. You can also order online at watsons.com.ph or call on select branches to have your orders delivered. For contact details of branches near you, you can check out this list: https://bit.ly/2z7coJP.

Smart and Talk 'N Text Ticket Load

February 13, 2018 7 Comments
Smart Ticket Load

It's always good to have an extra Smart Ticket Load. I usually buy this at 711. What I liked about buying ticket loads, is that I can use it in times of emergency, especially when you are in a place where there are no loading station. The lowest load you can buy is at P10 and you can buy it for the same price, unlike in the usual store loaders where they charge an additional P3 for every transaction.

For P50, I can use it to register to GIGASURF50. Just type GIGA50 and send it to 9999 and you'll have UNLI TEXTS TO ALL NETWORKS together w/ 1GB data +300MB for YouTube, iflix & more. Valid for 3 days!

By the way, I've misplaced my old mobile phone for a month and this is the last photo that I've taken with it. I remember I went to 711 to buy the Ticket Loads when I took this shot. Unfortunately, there's no available ticket load for Smart, just Talk 'N Text (TNT). Anyways, I still bought it because I can still use it on my Smart Prepaid Sim. After scratching the protective ink, I just change the starting number to 1510 instead of 1511, dial 1510 + the 14 digit pin numbers and send, then you will receive your load in a few seconds.

For those who didn't know this trick, I hope this helps. As for my old phone, we just found it a while ago... For those people who had been contacting me through my old smart sim, I'm sorry if I haven't received any of your messages. Now you know why...

In case, there are no available Smart Ticket Load, you can also buy the Talk 'N Text Ticket Load or the other way around, since Talk 'N Text is a sister company of Smart Communications, Inc. :)

Be sure to buy an extra Ticket Load, because it really helps in times of emergencies. ;)

Sony Xperia C4's Technical Issue - Not Turning On

January 25, 2017 0 Comments

Last night, my Sony Xperia C4's battery got drained. So, I charged it. It took a while to charge, like more than 4 hours already and the charging light is still red. So, I tried to turn it on but it won't turn on! I tried pressing the Power button for 10 seconds, hoping it will turn on afterwards but it didn't.

I remember I have the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy Tab before and I was successful in turning my device on by Pressing the Power button and the Volume down at the same time. So, I tried doing the same procedure in my Sony Xperia C4, but still it won't turn on.

So, I searched online and I already did the tips they've shared on my device but it won't turn on. So, I let it rest for a few hours and started to press the Power button and the Volume down at the same time again and I was SO HAPPY because it finally turned ON! Yay!

I was actually worried for a while but I'm happy now that it's back to normal again... :)

Have you experience this No Power Problem with your Android devices? I hope this post helps. The procedure is applicable in most of the Android devices, because it also worked in my Samsung Tab... :)

Features to Look for When Choosing the Right Nursing Bra

April 04, 2015 0 Comments
Features to Look for When Choosing the Right Nursing Bra

For mothers who are nursing their babies, it is wise to use nursing bras to support your increased breast size. It is what I am using when I was still pregnant (3rd trimester) and when I started to breastfeed my baby.

It is now easier to breastfeed our babies with the new type of nursing bras that has clips or flaps that can be opened from the cup. It's an advantage for us moms, especially those who frequently go out with their babies.

Choosing the right nursing bra to use isn't that hard to find. Here are the main features to look for when choosing the right Nursing Bra:

Breathable and Comfortable

It's best to choose a cotton nursing bra because it's breathable and more comfortable to wear the entire day. The best nursing bras are the ones that make you feel happy and comfortable no matter what your lifestyle is.

Watch out for bras that are non-breathable, it can trap moisture and encourage bacterial growth and soreness.

Breast Support

Find a nursing bra that can support your breast, either Flexi-wire or Wireless nursing bras are okay as long as you feel comfortable wearing them and can support your breasts.

Adjustability

Look for a nursing bra with adjustable straps and hooks because your breast size might change over time and sometimes it can change in a day, depending on how full you are with milk. ;)
Easy Nursing Access

Choose a nursing bra that works best for you. It's much better to try it first if you will be comfortable wearing the nursing bras with clips that you can easily snap on and off or the ones with stretchy fabrics that you can pull easily when it's time to breastfeed. Either of the two is great, as long as it offers easy nursing access for your babies anytime and anywhere.

If you choose the nursing bras with clips, try to check first if they can be easily opened or not, the easier it is to open the better. :)

For Moms who are pumping milk for their babies, this Hands-Free Nursing Pump Bra with Bra Extender would be the best type for you.

Hands-Free Breastfeeding Pumping Bra

I hope this post will help you make a better choice in buying the right nursing bras. :)

Helpful Exercise During Pregnancy

May 02, 2013 0 Comments
Having a regular exercise is very important to all the expectant mothers out there. Even a simple walking for 30 minutes is already good for you. Here's a helpful video I have found on YouTube: How to Exercise when Pregnant.

Note: Please refer to your OB/GYN (OBstetrics and GYNecology) before doing any of these exercises mentioned here.

Good posture must be maintained all throughout pregnancy. The temptation to slouch is strong, especially during the last trimester, when baby’s weigh pulls the abdomen forward. Compensating by leaning backward puts undue stress on her back. High heels make things worse. However, a proper posture is not enough. A pregnant woman needs exercise more than ever to keep fit, prevent the development of varicose veins by improving circulation, and make labor a little easier. Here are some Helpful Exercise During Pregnancy:

Squatting

From a standing position, sit down until your knees are fully bent and you are balanced on the balls of your feet. Do about 10 repetitions at a time. (For support, you can hold on to a chair and place a 4-cm-thick piece of wood or a rolled-up rug under your heels.)

Leg Exercise

1. Sit down and draw imaginary circles with your big toe by turning the ankles clockwise, then counter-clockwise. Do about 10 repetitions in each direction. Do the same with the other foot.
2. Alternately point your toes up then forward (forming a straight line from knee to toe). Do about 10 repetitions for each toe.

Pelvic Tilts

Get down on your hands and knees, and keep your back flat. Then simultaneously draw in your abdomen, tighten your buttocks, tilt your hips forward, and exhale. Do about 10 repetitions.

Source: Philippines Health Guide 2000.

TRIVIA:

Did You Know?

Studies have shown that women who work out while pregnant gain less weight, lose postpartum pounds more quickly, have faster deliveries, and are less likely to need a c-section.
